What questions should you ask them to assess if they\u2019ll do a good job prospecting and reaching out to prospective clients?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I believe this blog post will help you maneuver through the hiring process and find a good Sales Development Representative to handle cold mailing at your company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start the hiring process, shall we?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Step #1 Decide how many people you want on board<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we were to strip the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/how-to-write-a-cold-email-that-actually-works-six-step-tutorial\/\">cold <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c5eae05\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> <\/a>outreach to its bare minimum, we might say that it consists of three main elements:<\/span><b> an interesting <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fc52389b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> copy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is relevant to the prospect,<\/span><b> the sending strategy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>a quality list of prospects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this in mind, take a look at the possible scenarios of an SDR hire:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You hire a full-stack outbound specialist to handle prospecting, come up with a sending strategy, create the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-325b5862\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> copies and run campaigns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You divide the job into two positions: an SDR Strategist and SDR Researcher.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You hire an SDR Strategist to take care of creating the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-22106924\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> copy, strategizing and sending, and freelancers to assemble a list of prospects.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wouldn\u2019t choose the last option, though. You can never be sure if the list you got hasn\u2019t made its way to many other companies besides yours as well. It would be even worse if you decide to buy a list. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6431a2f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">Email<\/span> addresses on those lists are often outdated (which harms your deliverability) and they\u2019ve already been sold to many other people as well. Not to mention that basically you\u2019d just be sending <span id=\"urn:enhancement-57e28117\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emails<\/span> to random people who may not fall within your ICP at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have the resources to do so, I\u2019d recommend you go with the second option. Why? Both jobs require a different skillset and a different disposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Step #2 Create \u2018candidate personas\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming up with the ideal candidate may mean more work upfront, but will ultimately pay off, streamlining the whole hiring process. If you know exactly who you\u2019re seeking, finding them will be much easier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what to look for in an SDR Strategist and an SDR Researcher.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>SDR Strategist<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hard skills<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cold outreach strategist has to not only strategize (choose what they\u2019re going to write in the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d423b2ea\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emails<\/span>, when, how many and how often will they send them). They also have to be a skillful copywriter (to come up with a captivating<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subject line to catch your prospects&#8217; attention and compose a valuable and relevant <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ddf1d9ee\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> copy to engage them in a conversation).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to test if they really know what\u2019s what in cold <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b8104a90\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emailing<\/span> when you yourself know little or nothing about it? I\u2019ll give you some example questions in step #3. But for now, let\u2019s move on to the next thing at hand \u2013 the candidate\u2019s disposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft skills<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of work requires creativity and a certain amount of empathy (to create a persuasive message you need to be able to get in your prospects\u2019 shoes). Such a specialist should keep their finger on the pulse of the company: is the CEO attending a conference next month? Maybe it would be a good idea to send some networking emails beforehand?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>SDR Researcher<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hard skills<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to hard skills, a researcher has to know their way around certain tools, such as Excel. I\u2019ll come back to this in step #3, where you\u2019ll also find out what questions to ask them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft skills\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First and foremost, they need to have an analytical mind. They\u2019re going to be handling data on a daily basis, so they need to be diligent, patient and curious.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d say people who possess the ability to stay calm and are in general more on the quiet side would be a good fit for the position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both of these positions need to share one quality, though: a genuine interest in their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to determine if they are interested? Ask them not only about their experience, education, courses, and certifications, but also about the blogs, podcasts, or companies they follow. You\u2019ll be able to assess if they\u2019re taking any activities to improve in the field of outreach marketing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they need to be passionate about more than just marketing \u2013 your company\u2019s mission matters as well. You need to make sure they\u2019re in line with your company\u2019s core values, so they\u2019ll stay with you for the long run and bring value to the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, since you know exactly who you\u2019re looking for, it\u2019s time to start the search.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Step #3 Search for the best candidates<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might choose to go old school and just post a job opening online. Even though it\u2019s the easiest and often the most convenient solution and you might find a promising talent this way, it\u2019s worth to single out other options I encourage you to try out.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Word of mouth referral &#8211; what better way to find a good specialist than by getting a recommendation from someone you know? Ask around in your network to see if your colleagues and acquaintances have heard of a good-fit candidate for the opening.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Active sourcing &#8211; look for your next talent in online places that draw the kind of professionals you want to hire, e.g. Quora or marketing groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. Seek passive candidates and try to get in contact with them. What tools, if any, do you use for prospecting?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/prospect-list-building-tools\/\">this list of prospecting tools<\/a> for reference<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If they know their stuff, they\u2019ll most probably mention one or more of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you think about ready-made lists?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spoiler: they\u2019re a big no-no. Might ruin your deliverability and result in angering the prospects. Where on the web are our clients?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This depends on your niche, so you yourself are the best person to answer this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. What positions would you target?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This boils down to one thing: when it comes to buying your product, who decides to make the purchase? That\u2019s who they should be targeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>SDR Strategist<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. What best campaign results did you get?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s an easy warm-up question you can begin with. <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/cold-email-benchmarks-2020\/\">Here are some benchmarks<\/a> for reference<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. What tools do you use?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They should mention an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cd2ada65\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> automation tool. Make sure, though, that they\u2019re not referencing an email marketing tool. There\u2019s a huge difference between the two (we covered it <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/cold-email-vs-newsletter\/\">here<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and email marketing tools should not be used for cold outreach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. What 3 prospect groups would you target (for our product\/company)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This, again, depends on your particular niche, so you need to answer it yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. If you were to launch campaigns to different countries, how would they be different?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There might be many variations of this question, for example: If you were to launch a campaign to start-ups and finance companies, how would they differ? The general idea is to check if the candidate is able to create campaigns tailored to different prospect groups instead of one general message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. How will we acquire leads? (i.e. What kind of campaigns can we conduct, other than cold mailing?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some possible answers include: campaigns to reactivate old leads, to convert trial users to paid customers or LinkedIn campaigns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. What do you think about ready-made lists?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the answer to question #2 in the researcher section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. How would you know our emails are getting into spam?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The open rate is low &#8211; this might be a sign either of bad targeting (i.e. a poor quality prospect list), a weak subject line, or that your emails are being diverted into the spam folder (this may be a <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/spam-words\/\">result of using too many spam-triggering words<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. What would you do if the open rate was low?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This question aims at assessing if the candidate\u2019s down with the technical basics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find the answer <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/test-email-metrics\/\">here<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. When would you say is the right time to iterate the campaign?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example answer might be a week after the last follow-up has been sent and our campaign results are unsatisfactory. It depends, though, on the country and the industry you\u2019re in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Who would you offer X to?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X being a bit more unusual<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product. They may not be able to find the best answer, but the point here is to see if they\u2019re creative enough to come up with an answer at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonus: if you\u2019d like to test the candidates\u2019 knowledge, here are two tasks you may ask them to do:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the researcher to find and remove<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">duplicates in an Excel file<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the strategist to write an email copy\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good email copy is short, personalized, brings value to the prospect and ends with a clear CTA.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Your turn to share<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope you\u2019ll find the hiring process as easy as pie now.
