We&#8217;re sharing the interview with you here as well. Keep reading to find out more about Woodpecker customers, our greatest\u00a0challenges, and the &#8220;why&#8221; behind <span id=\"urn:enhancement-56e2c773\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This interview has been carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kwdinc\">Kevin William David<\/a> and originally published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/stories\/send-cold-emails-follow-ups-automatically-from-your-mailbox\">Stories section at Siftery.com<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<h2>What is Woodpecker?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Woodpecker<\/a>\u00a0is an online tool for sending personalized <span id=\"urn:enhancement-43c0e0e7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> outreach campaigns. By automating the sending process of opening <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f6a482b7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emails<\/span> and follow-ups, it facilitates the work of business development reps, sales reps, or any other people at a company responsible for outbound lead generation, and saves them even a few hours every day. It fits the outbound outreach process described in Aaron Ross\u2019s book, \u201cPredictable Revenue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Because <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9fcd344e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> detects replies to your <span id=\"urn:enhancement-20d16d28\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emails<\/span>, it\u2019s able to automatically stop the follow-up sequence once someone replies to you. It also detects automatic replies, replies to forwards, and responses from a different <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2370708e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email address<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The most important part, however, is that you actually connect your mailbox with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ae706d31\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> and your messages are sent from there one by one \u2014 so it\u2019s really almost exactly like you were actually sending them on your own. And that\u2019s how you keep your deliverability rate on a very high level.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/siftery\/image\/upload\/v1500381581\/v2\/p\/stories\/stgbaX1wlloZiO\/1.png\" alt=\"img\" \/>\n<h2>What is the \u201cwhy\u201d of Woodpecker?<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019re building <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c425acab\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> to help <span id=\"urn:enhancement-114f605c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">B2B<\/span> companies save the time that is usually spent on some daunting and repetitive <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a601a5cd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">sales<\/span> tasks. We help automate the tasks that can be automated, and that\u2019s how our users gain some extra time to build the really crucial human-to-human relations with their prospects and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5b5ec38\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">business<\/span> partners. By helping the companies get new customers, we help them grow independently.<\/p>\n<p>The inspiration for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1a71df4f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> was really a problem we were facing ourselves. Everything started from the realization that we were spending even a few hours a day just for sending <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ce469403\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emails<\/span> to get in touch with our prospects. We needed a solution that would allow us to save some of the time, but at the same time we wanted to keep the high personalization level and a similar sending frequency that we were able to achieve sending the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cc2d6aaa\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emails<\/span> manually. That\u2019s how <span id=\"urn:enhancement-25dd95b6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> was born in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a blog post on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/cold-email\/how-weve-managed-sending-cold-emails-follow-ups-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the whole story<\/a>, if you\u2019re interested in more details.<\/p>\n<h2>How is Woodpecker different from other similar tools?<\/h2>\n<p>First of all, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-576be8d6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> is not another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/mailchimp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MailChimp<\/strong><\/a>. We actually use MailChimp for sending our newsletters. Marketing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-788fde70\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> automation and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-dcf6b52c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">sales<\/span> automation are two different things, with different goals and assumptions, and that\u2019s why they require different sets of tools.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of a cold <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7671bd72\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> campaign sent from <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8a7e4413\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> is to get replies from ideal prospects and spark up conversations with them. That\u2019s why we prioritize the human touch in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f9c61481\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> automation, as well as the automation of follow-up messages.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/siftery\/image\/upload\/v1500381581\/v2\/p\/stories\/stgbaX1wlloZiO\/2.png\" alt=\"img\" \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>That is how adding a follow-up in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-eb4fdb25\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> looked like back in 2017.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s necessary for the cold <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d36cd7b0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> recipients to feel that a real human reaches out to them, and that they didn\u2019t receive another generic message sent to dozens of random addresses. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b6e214d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> sends <span id=\"urn:enhancement-720ade2c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emails<\/span> directly from the user\u2019s personal mailbox. We make sure the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b7bcc102\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emails<\/span> are sent individually, not in bulk, to guarantee the human-like sending process and increase deliverability. What\u2019s more, the follow-ups may be sent in the same thread as the first <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5df55bef\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> \u2014 to provide the prospect with a full context of the message.<\/p>\n<p>And thanks to the reply detection, you can be sure none of your prospects will get a message they weren\u2019t supposed to get. All that to make the automated sending process as time-efficient as possible, and feel safe at the same time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some people say outbound doesn\u2019t work anymore, but if you put quality before quantity, you\u2019ll see satisfying results. After all, it\u2019s not about how many messages you sent, but who you send them to and how you do it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Who is Woodpecker for?<\/h2>\n<p><span id=\"urn:enhancement-92b0edd5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span>\u2019s customer base consists mainly of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4c8eb611\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">SaaS<\/span> companies, software-houses, companies offering business consulting, and lead generation agencies. We have a special panel for the agencies, because they have a specific set of needs to cater for. Our app is used by <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8a0fc2ef\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">sales<\/span> reps, business development reps, and marketing people at the companies where there\u2019s no separate team for outbound.<\/p>\n<h2>How are your customers using Woodpecker? Could you share a few different use cases?<\/h2>\n<p>Generally speaking, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e566caf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> is used for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f891bde2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">sales<\/span> outreach. Businesses compile a list of ideal potential customers and reach out to those customers via <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2f799c46\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span>. There are also others who use <span id=\"urn:enhancement-64258ffd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> for nurturing leads they got through webinars, ebooks, newsletters, etc. They contact some of those people to start conversations, and not to send promotional material. We have a couple of customer success stories published on our blog.<\/p>\n<p>For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/news\/case-study-lead-pal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lead Pal, a lead generation agency uses Woodpecker to<\/a>\u00a0run outbound campaigns for themselves and theirclients.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/news\/case-study-edrone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edrone.me<\/a>, on the other hand, a CRM for ecommerce, runs cold <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e21f4998\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> campaigns in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-50a3e29b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> to find new customers for their <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c4be7af4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">SaaS<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4a2d31e4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">business<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Have there been unique use cases for Woodpecker that you hadn\u2019t thought of or expected?<\/h2>\n<p>Definitely the lead nurturing scenario. We weren\u2019t planning any specific features for that flow. Some of our customers wanted an access to our API, because they wanted to use <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3b5405cd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\">Woodpecker<\/span> for nurturing leads they got from inbound marketing, so apparently the app can be used for contacting warm leads as well as cold ones.<\/p>\n<h2>Were there any early \u2018growth hacks\u2019 that have contributed to your current success?<\/h2>\n<p>I would say that investing our time in regular content marketing activities helps us a lot. Our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog<\/a>\u00a0and newsletter help us provide a steady source of new customers, but they\u2019re also run in such a way to answer the most bugging questions our present customers have about cold <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4459534b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">emailing<\/span>. I think the key is a narrow range of topics and regularity. We publish one new post a week focused on practical aspects of cold <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a3f79678\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> outreach. It\u2019s been working great so far.<\/p>\n<h2>What were some of the biggest challenges while building the product early on and how did you solve them?<\/h2>\n<p>The biggest challenge was to decide what to say no to. Early on, you need to avoid the temptation to create a product that does it all. We decided to focus on the well-thought out <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ff741cad\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">email<\/span> sending automation and we stick to it. We\u2019ve had a few feature requests that we declined because we had decided to keep our focus on automating one particular stage of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-33b3687d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\">sales<\/span> process.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why lately we\u2019ve been putting a lot of energy into providing the highest possible deliverability and safety of sending instead of developing new features designed for other possible use cases. We\u2019re aware of some different views on product development, but the narrow focus and openness for integrations is really something that\u2019 worked great for us so far.<\/p>\n<h2>What have been some of the most interesting integrations you\u2019ve added?<\/h2>\n<p>The most important integrations for us were the ones that allowed our clients to integrate the tools they were already using before they started using Woodpecker, that is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/zapier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zapier<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/piesync\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>PieSync<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to develop a product that generates value for the customers and it\u2019s much easier to provide that initial value when they can easily fit the new tool into their current workflow. Thanks to Zapier and PieSync, the range of integration possibilities is very wide. But we plan some greater native integrations as well.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the top products that you depend on to run the company &amp; how do you use them?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pipedrive.com\/\"><strong>Pipedrive<\/strong><\/a>, for sure, since it connects all the departments: marketing, sales, customer success.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/google-analytics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Google Analytics<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is another useful tool. We use it to verify where our trial users come from.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/basecamp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Basecamp<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/trello\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Trello<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0are great solutions for keeping track of the projects.<\/p>\n<p>We use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/slack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Slack<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0all the time to communicate within the company. We are just starting to implement\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/mixpanel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mixpanel<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to measure all the activity of website visitors and the users of our product.<\/p>\n<p>Another solution we are going to implement this year is called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siftery.com\/churnzero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>ChurnZero<\/strong><\/a>, which we\u2019ll use to aggregate data from all our systems to measure our user\u2019s health score and provide better customer care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hope you enjoyed the interview and that you could learn something more about us.
