Try starting a conversation by offering something for free because you want to help. That\u2019s it. No strings attached, no hidden agenda, no trick questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could be an industry report or white paper you\u2019ve published. Or maybe it\u2019s sharing some interesting statistics that are somehow relevant to the recipient. Or it could be something prepared by you or experts on your team that can help the recipient\u2019s business \u2014 there are lots of possibilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a CTA, invite the recipient to share their thoughts with you, leave feedback or share your content further with whomever they think could benefit. It\u2019s a tough position to start from and that\u2019s why every bit of persuasion helps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A powerful psychological tool you can use with recipients is to make it clear that all decisions remain in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hands. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decide what\u2019s next. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make the next move (if they want to). <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will take your advice or consider your message or whatever you want them to do <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if they want to.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychologists have found that adding \u201cbut the decision is yours\u201d at the end of a conversation about making some kind of change can dramatically increase the chances that someone will in fact make that change. It creates the feeling that, once they\u2019ve made that decision, it\u2019s time to get back in touch with you and carry the conversation forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Careful, though &#8211; once is enough in something as short as a cold email, don\u2019t repeatedly remind the prospect that \u201cthe choice is theirs\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>What it might look like<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have helped teams just like yours improve almost overnight for over ten years but you\u2019re the best judge of whether or not we would be a good fit for you. Your CTAs are elements of your cold emails, aren\u2019t they? Yes, and even here there is room for some creative thinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too often, cold email CTA text feels like it was written once and never improved upon \u2014 \u201cWant to learn more?\u201d, \u201cInterested?\u201d, \u201cThoughts?\u201d etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shake things up a bit and put your CTAs to work in the persuasion game. Start by inverting the usual \u201cyes\/no\u201d answers to make \u201cNo\u201d the answer you want. Why? Well, we have to go back to the psychology books again and be reminded that it\u2019s easier to get someone to give you a \u201cNo\u201d for an answer than a \u201cYes\u201d. Giving a \u201cYes\u201d feels like it comes with an obligation to do something, whereas it\u2019s always easy to say \u201cNo\u201d just\u2026because.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, with this in mind, try using a CTA like \u201cOpposed to learning more?\u201d or \u201cSatisfied with spending too much on your insurance?\u201d or \u201cAny objections to learning more?\u201d etc. Let them give you an easy \u201cNo\u201d while taking some kind of action at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a professional headshot in your email signature\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s one you probably weren\u2019t expecting but it makes sense (and gets results). Give it some thought and see if it can work as well for you as it has for others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everyone likes the idea of placing a photo of themselves in their email signatures and I get it. Shyness, self-consciousness, the judgment of others \u2014 all those reasons and more make this a tricky one for many.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, there is some powerful psychology at work here. Including a nice, professional image of yourself lends credibility to your message. It allows you to make virtual eye contact. It reminds people that there is another person on the other side of this conversation.
