It\u2019s a plan to move the prospect from one stage to the next using creative messaging and different touchpoints.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cadences don\u2019t have to be super-long or detailed. There\u2019s a reason why the oldest electronic communication medium is still the strongest \u2014 emails work. Everyone has their own personal inbox, sometimes more than one, and engaging with people there remains the top priority for any sales effort.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cold calls.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Still the best compliment to cold emails, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/cold-calling-or-cold-emailing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cold calls have their own pros and cons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but they have to be part of your outreach sequence. If the idea is to be where your prospects are, your prospects are definitely on the phone so find a way to make this work.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>LinkedIn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. No other social media platform comes closer if we\u2019re talking about making professional contacts. Connection requests, messages, likes &amp; comments \u2014 they all put you right in front of your target audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good mix of channels always enhances any outreach program. How many channels should be in the mix? There\u2019s no one correct answer but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/how-many-touches-multichannel-sales-cadence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this is definitely something to look at closer <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when putting your own cadence together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits of making (and using) your own sales cadence\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot to gain by taking the time to create a cadence for your cold outreach campaigns. It\u2019s always better when you\u2019re following steps according to some kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marmind.com\/blog\/operational-plan-for-marketing-teams\">operational plan<\/a> and a sales cadence delivers in ways that randomly making calls and sending emails never can. Among other things, you\u2019ll get improvements in these areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Scalability<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When everyone is working from the same playbook, you can add to your team and, with training and support, be sure that you\u2019re keeping the standards and operating in the same way, small team or huge team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Flexibility<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have all the steps written out into a roadmap, it\u2019s easier to examine, change and adapt the individual components when looking for improvements. You can experiment with one part without changing everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Awareness<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interacting with you at multiple touchpoints deepens engagement with the prospect. An email followed up by a phone call usually has much more impact than an email followed up by another email. When you\u2019re following a cadence, you can miss a prospect in one stage and reconnect in another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responses<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The numbers are clear \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/follow-up-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more follow-ups mean more replies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And doesn\u2019t it just make sense that the more you try to start a conversation, the more successful you will be? Using a sales cadence builds follow-ups into your strategy, which means you can count on more replies than one-off campaigns with no follow-up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making your pitch<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, you want to make your most effective early in the conversation but when you have a sales cadence, you can spread it out and explain your value proposition in parts. This way, every touchpoint is another reason for the prospect to get more interested.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say that cold emails, cold calls and LinkedIn are the three pillars of your cold outreach program. It should be easy for you to track at what point and after what message in the cadence most of your replies come in. This tells you something important about how your message is structured. This means knowing your product inside out and understanding things from the prospect\u2019s perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start things off right<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asking \u201cHow are you?\u201d or \u201cDid I catch you at a bad time?\u201d may <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seem <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like nice, polite ways to start things off but in fact they\u2019re terrible mistakes. Why? Because they either sound insincere or give the prospect an easy way to end the conversation right away. There\u2019s no one right way to start conversations but there are lots of wrong ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some of the worst cold calling openers, according to Nick Cegelski:<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WUHdHmdvtyE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give the person you\u2019re talking to control<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create an intro that lets the prospect decide if talking to you further is going to happen or not. \u201cGive me a minute to tell you why I\u2019m calling you specifically and after that you can end the conversation if you want\u201d. How can they say no to giving you a minute?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do some research, but be reasonable<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too many sales pros use \u2018doing research\u2019 for not making the actual call to the prospect. Yes, you need to know something about the person you\u2019re speaking to (use good sources like videos, podcasts or any press coverage of the person) but make sure you spend more time calling and talking, rather than \u2018researching\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>But how much time should you spend researching a prospect? Nick has an answer for you:<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3fJyKc7YQus\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be persistent<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a clich\u00e9 but it\u2019s true. You won\u2019t get anywhere if you let rejection, delays and other difficulties get to you. Be on the phone every day or most days because that\u2019s how things happen. Any time you spend away from the phone or reaching out by email is time the prospect is forgetting about you. Be sure to send a connection request on LinkedIn and visit their profile soon after. Is there some other reason prospects should be interested in talking to you? Every contact with them should be centered around what you can do for them and not who you are.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know who your audience is (and isn\u2019t)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as sales cadences have a purpose, so do Ideal Customer Profiles (ICP). There\u2019s no room in your sales cadence for people who will never be interested in what you\u2019re selling. Leave them out and concentrate on your target audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tracking the results of your sales cadence\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You put in the time and effort into building a sales cadence to get better results, but how do you know if it\u2019s working?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some basic metrics that should move in the right direction if your sales cadence is effective. Before you start a sales cadence, be sure to document your averages over, for example, the three to six months before you implement it. These are the primary areas to focus on to see how well your sales cadence is working:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email open rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email reply rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn open and reply rates (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/a414226\/finding-your-inmail-response-rate?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to learn how)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call-to-booking-a-meeting ratio<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these should improve when you have the discipline to follow the structured path that a sales cadence provides.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time to start your own sales cadence\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have noticed that we didn\u2019t cover any downsides of sales cadences.
