So not only did he get what he asked for in the first place, but more &#8211; because of course in the guest post he got a free link to himself.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s analyze:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><em><b>&#8216;Subject line<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: About your cold outreach tip&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The subject line used in this cold email example is highly relevant and intriguing. It\u2019s fairly short but manages to prompt an \u201cOoh, I wonder which outreach tip they\u2019re on about\u201d moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Cathy gets plenty of emails every single day, in this case the subject line got her so hooked, and she was so curious to find out which tip Nick was referring to, that she opened the email. This is crucial because the <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/subject-line-example\/\">subject line is the key<\/a> to your entire message, which is locked until the prospect decides to open it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So remember, if your prospect doesn&#8217;t find your subject line personally relevant, interesting or valuable, they simply won\u2019t open the email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another great thing about this subject line is that it\u2019s closely tied to the email copy, which is extremely important. It helps the reader follow on smoothly from the subject line to the rest of the message and not lose focus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why you should stay away from clickbait-style subject lines, whose sole purpose is to get the prospect to open the message. Once the prospect discovers the subject line has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the message they&#8217;ll just get annoyed &#8211; which means you can forget about getting a reply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;I\u2019m trying to figure out some outreach tricks that remain behind the scenes and wanted to pick up on your point about personalization (from <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this post<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">):&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The subject line links seamlessly to the first sentence of the message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Straight away, Nick makes the reaso<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n for reaching out clear and adds a professionally-looking hyperlink to a specific blog post, which increases the credibility of his message.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Adding links to your cold emails (especially too many links) might influence your deliverability, so think twice before doing so. But if you really want to, use <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/links-in-cold-email\/#why-are-custom-tracking-domains-safer\">custom tracking domains<\/a>, and add your link just like Nick did in his email.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, links in cold emails are considered &#8220;suspicious&#8221; and very few people click on them. But in this cold email example, Nick wrote the message in such a way that I&#8217;d probably have clicked on it myself. Also, the link goes to Cathy&#8217;s article, and not Nick\u2019s company site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Including a link to the exact blog post highlights to the prospect that you respect their time. To catch their eye, you need something more than: \u201cI\u2019m reading your blog. Great stuff.\u201d Refer to a chosen part of the article.&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that you\u2019re trying to do everything to make the prospect\u2019s job &#8211; aka replying &#8211; as easy for them as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quoting the specific part of the article in your email helps the reader understand exactly which part you\u2019re asking about. Also, it highlights that you&#8217;ve most likely taken the time to thoroughly read the article since you have chosen a line or two to focus on, rather than the entire post (which is what cold email senders usually do). This will immediately make your email stand out from the crowd. And your reader will appreciate it, trust me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Including a specific part you want to ask about will also make it much easier for your prospect to give a specific answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;It makes pretty good sense, but there\u2019s one thing that got me a bit puzzled.&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this cold email example the sender says that after reading the article he would like some clarification, but he does so very delicately and cleverly. He starts with something positive: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">makes pretty good sense\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, before admitting that there is a part that he&#8217;d like to understand better: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cbut there\u2019s one thing that got me a bit puzzled\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This shows your prospect that you\u2019re genuinely interested.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Do you mind if I send you a question?&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, people are more comfortable with answering \u201cno\u201d rather than \u201cyes\u201d. So by cleverly phrasing the question in a way where \u201cno, I don&#8217;t mind\u201d is the desired reply, you\u2019re slightly tipping the scales in your favor.\u00a0 Since we associate saying \u201cyes\u201d with agreeing to something and \u201cno\u201d with declining offers, your prospect may even automatically reply with a \u201cno\u201d, without realizing that a \u201cno\u201d answer to this email actually means they\u2019re agreeing to the sender asking a question.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are people much more resistant to saying \u201cyes\u201d? Well, because it suggests commitment, and people are scared to commit. Especially when they don\u2019t know the person who is asking them for something, which is the case in the cold emailing world. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing this, try using it to your advantage and frame the questions in a way to get what you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question included in this cold email example:\u00a0 \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you mind if I send you a question?\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could also be asked differently. For example: \u201cIs it okay for you if I send you a question?\u201d or \u201dCan I send you a question?\u201d. But in both of these cases the answer &#8220;yes&#8221;, rather than &#8220;no&#8221; is the desired one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we recommend you take some time to think about the questions you use, once they&#8217;re written, and consider if they could be reworded in a way to reduce resistance and a feeling of commitment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An interesting strategy here would be to <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/ab-testing-in-cold-email\/\">A\/B test<\/a> different questions where both would have the same meaning, but would be phrased slightly differently &#8211; in one the desired answer would be a &#8220;no&#8221; and in the other a &#8220;yes&#8221;. Test it out for yourself and see if your results differ.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;I\u2019m also writing an article for our blog and could quote you there (with attribution to Woodpecker.co). &#8216;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toward the end of the message the sender highlights a clear benefit for the prospect. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By doing so, the prospect will be much more likely to respond, as they\u2019ll be getting something valuable in return (in Cathy\u2019s case &#8211; being quoted in a blog post and a backlink to Woodpecker).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Let me know if you\u2019d be interested&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing fancy, but the prospect knows exactly what you would like them to do next &#8211; which is the ultimate goal of a <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/perfect-cta-or-how-to-end-up-my-cold-email\/\">good CTA<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall this cold email example is super chilled, non-pushy and we could even say &#8211; very friendly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n\n<aside \n    class=\"tip-block \" \n    style='background-color: #c7ecc1; border-color: #4cd635;'\n>\n    <div class=\"tip-block__content\">\n        <p><b>Key takeaways<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your subject line personally relevant, valuable or intriguing for the prospect<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State a clear reason for reaching out &#8211; it emphasizes you\u2019re not a spammer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think twice before you include a link in your email &#8211; it can negatively impact your deliverability. But if you think it\u2019s necessary, make sure to use custom tracking domains and embed only professionally-looking hyperlinks &#8211; it shows thoughtfulness and relevant research, and increases the chance of your prospect clicking on it<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do everything you can to make your prospect\u2019s job easier &#8211; don\u2019t expect them to spend their own time looking for an article you\u2019re asking about<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include direct quotes from articles in your email &#8211; it saves the prospect&#8217;s time, shows them you&#8217;ve probably thoroughly read the article<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with a positive before saying there\u2019s something you would like to make clearer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try rephrasing questions so the desired answer is a &#8220;no&#8221;, rather than a &#8220;yes&#8221; &#8211; prospects are resistant to commitment and a &#8220;yes&#8221; is associated with it. (would love to know your thoughts btw.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m having a call with Cathy next week on next steps, so will keep you posted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I wanted to email you today specifically since I came across your recent post on how you created a private Instagram Woodpecker account to keep-up with the team, but it didn&#8217;t work out well.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think that post really struck an emotional chord.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, I wanted to help and share a few things that would work in this case. Here&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an interesting article<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which shows how others have done it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve closely worked with 3 CEOs of small companies in the past and also followed journeys of 12+ CEOs on how they run their companies, especially how they do regular communication with their team members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frankly, most advice and articles out there on google are boring and plain fluff. For eg, they will say things like &#8212; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;create trust&#8221;, &#8220;transparency&#8221;, &#8220;have a safe work environment&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc. I am absolutely sure you are already doing all of these things right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, that doesn&#8217;t work. Running a 70-people team like Woodpecker is tough, and I can imagine how your day-to-day operations look like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, let me share 2 specific things I&#8217;ve seen which have worked tried-and-tested for a lot of these companies &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Start a company-only newsletter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of the regular email updates, these can be very close and engaging, for eg: asking about team member&#8217;s personal goals, AMA sessions, confessions of ceos, things to improve, plans for the next quarter\/year\/3 years, interesting things to buy, books to read, etc. (check Dense Discovery&#8217;s newsletters to get an idea)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For eg: Ramit Sethi does this amazingly well. Check some of his posts, especially on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confessions of a CEO<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series. It&#8217;s a huge hit!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Private community:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not sure if all your team members would be active on facebook, but the idea is to have a closed private community, where people look forward to it, and can just have fun, share their recent wins, plans, vacation ideas, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also a place where you host regular AMA sessions and answer it all<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also a place where they can ask ANY questions and get the flexibility if they want to post their questions anonymously\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key in both the activities above is active engagement. I&#8217;ve seen places where engagement within groups is low and it dies down after a while, and at the same time places where engagement is super-high that people just LOVE it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Running both will require good participation from your end as well.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It just creates a family-like environment within the company and I fundamentally think creating the right environment with the right talent is a powerful tool for growth of any company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Btw: I understand you must be already busy managing lots of things Matt, so I&#8217;d be more than happy to do these 2 activities for you, voluntarily. I&#8217;ve done it in the past as well.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, just thought to help you out and share useful resources that could help you here. For example, they will say things like &#8212; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;create trust&#8221;, &#8220;transparency&#8221;, &#8220;have a safe work environment&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc. I am absolutely sure you are already doing all of these things right now.&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note just how specific the sender is being throughout this entire cold email, which reflects how much time and effort he has put into preparing this message.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;So, let me share 2 specific things I&#8217;ve seen which have worked tried-and-tested for a lot of these companies:<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start a company-only newsletter<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private community&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sender lists 2 specific examples and gives further explanation of how these could be applied to help Woodpecker (check them out in the email above, as here I\u2019ve shortened them for conciseness).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice how he avoids including generic examples, which could be applied to virtually any company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, by highlighting that these methods have been tried and tested in similar companies, Matt may be more inclined to trust that they might also work for Woodpecker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Including useful resources (confessions of a CEO) are always helpful and will be appreciated by the prospect. And the fact that the chosen resource is about a CEO and the email was sent to Matt makes it highly relevant, so Matt will be more willing to check it out.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;The key in both the activities above is active engagement. I&#8217;ve seen places where engagement within groups is low and it dies down after a while, and at the same time places where engagement is super-high that people just LOVE it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Running both will require good participation from your end as well.)&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;It just creates a family-like environment within the company and I fundamentally think creating the right environment with the right talent is a powerful tool for growth of any company.&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sender has definitely dug deep into research here, as the key value mentioned (family-like environment) is also super significant for Woodpecker as a company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And since we&#8217;ve reached this point of the email, let me just stop for a second and say that this is an example of a very clever cold email. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, the sender mentions a problem he knows Matt has &#8211; because Matt himself wrote about it online. Next, he talks about how the solutions that can usually be found, for example on Google, are lousy because they&#8217;re extremely vague. He quickly proceeds to give his own solution (and took the time to write it out in detail). And then, just as Matt is thinking, \u201cWell great, but it all takes time, and I barely have enough time to scratch my head\u201d, the sender, seemingly in passing, adds in parenthesis:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;(Btw: I understand you must be already busy managing lots of things Matt, so I&#8217;d be more than happy to do these 2 activities for you, voluntarily. I&#8217;ve done it in the past as well.)&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, this emphasizes the sender\u2019s eagerness to help and willingness to take control. By highlighting that they\u2019ve done these activities in the past Matt could be confident that they know what they\u2019re doing and are not newbies to the topic. Moreover, it shows Matt that the sender could probably be trusted to carry out these activities successfully for Woodpecker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Super super congrats to you and the team for being on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, an amazing achievement to Woodpecker, and I&#8217;m looking forward to more exciting news!&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shows relevant and real-time research, which further highlights just how much the sender is keeping up with Woodpecker news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that if you have a chance, it\u2019s always nice to congratulate someone on their achievements, no matter if they\u2019re big or small. However, note that nothing is pushy, the resources are there if Matt wants to explore them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is definitely not a typical cold email example, as it&#8217;s much longer than what most people deem appropriate. However, this just shows that although there are some rules you should generally stick to with cold emails, it&#8217;s largely a game of trial and error.
