Just because they\u2019re short, don\u2019t think they don\u2019t matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s divide our advice on subject lines into \u201cDo\u2019s\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019ts\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>DO<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Keep it short<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And not just because you only have a handful of characters. Do both yourself and the prospect a favor and get to the point quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Have some connection to what\u2019s inside the mail<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> This may seem like an obvious point but it is often forgotten. Be sure that what the prospect will find inside is an extension of your subject line.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tech stack<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramping SDRs<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One question<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better view<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DON\u2019T<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Try to be too creative<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> This is one of the only times when being creative is a bad thing. Don\u2019t make the mistake of thinking you must have some witty or shocking subject line to get attention. Keep it simple and get to the point (plus, trying too hard can set off the clickbait detector in your prospect and your message won\u2019t even get opened!).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Attract the attention of spam filters<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> Here\u2019s another reason to keep it simple and direct. When you try to spice up your subject line with salesy words, excessive punctuation or other \u201clook at me!\u201d elements, you\u2019re potentially crossing the line into spam territory. Avoid cliche marketing tactics and stay on the right side of that line.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Preview text<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This first visible fragment of your message in recipient inboxes is often called the \u201cmost important real estate\u201d in all kinds of marketing because it\u2019s your chance to draw them in further without making them click on the message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lesson here is that you shouldn\u2019t waste this space on introductions and pleasantries and instead <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get to the point<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not the time or place for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy name is\u2026\u201d, \u201cI saw\u2026\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI noticed\u2026\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, new roles in industry have this one challenge that keeps coming up.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Checking your job openings right now.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The preview text is a continuation of your subject line, so use it to get recipients interested enough to open the message to learn more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Problems<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping your messaging focused around pain points is a basic in sales generally, not just with B2B cold emails.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is quite similar to the \u201cRelevance\u201d angle we\u2019ve already covered above but more in line with goals, deadlines and pressures faced by your prospect. Think in terms of \u201cHow can I help this person right now?\u201d to get in the right mindset.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing a problem faced by your prospect gets you past the first \u201cDo I really need this?\u201d barrier because, yes,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of course<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they need it.
